Registering your own domain name

Having your own domain on the internet is both easy and cheap. It brings with it not only the possibility of setting up a website, but also builds confidence and credibility into the online activities you conduct through it. To a business this can be vitally important.

Domain name ownership enhances business credibility

Using your own domain says something about your committment. In the business arena this image enhancement extends to professional credibility, conveying a positive impression about your permanence and trustworthiness.

Think about it.

It’s about confidence

Faced with a choice between doing business with a company whose contact email is sales1395@hotmail.com or another company contactable through sales@theirowndomain.com, which one would you prefer? Which one inspires more confidence, or carries the suggestion they will still exist tomorrow?

It’s about independence

Connections to the internet are typically made through an internet service provider, with at least one email account provided as part of the service. Using these email accounts may seem the obvious thing to do, but it can end up tying you to that particular ISP even when you may prefer, or need, to change. If you do change ISP, then so too must all your ISP-based email addresses.

This simply isn’t an issue if you have your own domain name. You are free to change ISP as frequently as you like, your email addresses will not change at all.

It’s about being taken seriously

As a business, running email through the likes of Yahoo!, hotmail or your ISP, is akin to running your website through geocities, myspace or again your ISP. Such services may be “free”, but they’re not without cost. Whether intended or not, it says that you really don’t care about what online image you project, that you are not to be taken seriously.
